I don't have any technical knowledge, can I still enroll in this course?
Yes, you can. We believe privacy is a basic human right that should be available to anyone. We made this course so that even our grandmothers could be following it!
When I DeGoogle my phone, will I still be able to use my favorite apps?
You will. In the course we will explain what the different implications will be for using different kind of apps. We will, for example, highly discourage you to use an app like Whatsapp or Facebook. But, if there’s really no other option (on another phone for example), we will still offer the option to use it in the most privately friendly way possible. And, on the other hand, we will still highly encourage you to get used to using alternatives.
I have an iPhone, can I still follow this course?
The first section of the course will be a general one, focusing on the privacy flaws we have on the internet in general. The rest of the course will be specifically for Android phone. The thing with iPhones is that the software is not as editable as much as Android, so there is a lot less you can do. What you can do, however, is purchase a cheap Android phone with great specs (like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro). You can then rebuild this phone and use this one for the maximum amount of privacy. You then have a choice to make.

I want to buy a new but affordable phone to DeGoogle it, which one should I get?
We at Android-Privacy.com we like the Xiaomi Redmi note 8/9, because of it’s great specs for a really low price. This low price mostly comes from all the bloatware that comes pre-installed on it, but we are going to get rid of that anyway 😉
I can just install a custom rom and then I'm done right?
No! This is a big mistake a lot of people make. Just installing a private rom will get rid of Google’s Android, but you’re still far away from the most privacy friendly setup (also see section 2 of the course).
How long is section 3?
Section 3 itself is 2 hours of video material. The rebuilding will probably take 3 hours for a more technical person and 4/5 hours for a less technical person.
How much time do I save?
Figuring all of this out on your own will probably cost you weeks. That’s why we created this course, so you can have digital privacy without the need to do all the research!

Even wennen, maar top
Ik ben ICT-er dus het was voor mij niet echt moeilijk om deze telefoon in gebruik te nemen. De video’s van Wesley zijn voor mij erg duidelijk. Het was alleen wel even wennen dat zaken net even anders werken dan op een Samsung. Zo heb je met een Samsung in internet een back button in internet. Op deze telefoon moet je swipen om terug te gaan. Duurde even voordat ik dat zag. Ik heb besloten WhatsApp er niet meer op te zetten. Ze moeten me maar appen met Signal.
Het aan- en uitzetten van de microfoon als je gaat bellen went snel. Ik moet alleen omsand nog uitvogelen, want heb er nog niet echt routes mee kunnen plannen (maar hier zijn twee video’s over gemaakt dor Wesley heb ik gezien).

Heerlijke telefoon die zolang je geen internet gebruikt. Ik moet echter heel vaak Orbot uitzetten om bij sites te kunnen komen (en dan vergeet je Orbot weer aan te zetten). Hiernaast blijkt de ene zoekmachine om een of andere reden beter te werken dan de ander (bijv. DuckDuckGo beter dan Ecosia).Maar Duck Duck Go censureert weer. .Ook updates falen regelmatig en slagen pas als je Orbot uit zet. Sommige apps (die ik op Island houd) hebben persé Google play nodig (zoals ParkMobile). Dat is heel jammer want ik ben het met jullie eens dat je Google zoveel mogelijk moet vermijden. Is er hier overigens een oplossing voor?

Heb geduld
Geduld is een schone zaak bij het instellen van deze telefoon. Ik moest leren mijn weg te vinden. In veel opzichten werkt het besturingsysteem hetzelfde als elk ander besturingssysteem. De verschillen zitten m vooral in het gebruik van het TOR netwerk en de Prive/Werk omgeving. Hier is ook en filmpje van, waarin de structuur van de telefoon uitgelegd wordt, maar dat filmpje werkte niet zo lekker op mijn Iphone, waardoor het voor mijn lastig te volgen was. Uiteindelijk met wat hulp van een internetbrowser is het me inmiddels gelukt de telefoon zo in te stellen dat ik m gebruiken kan.
En het voelt goed! Zo blij weer controle over mijn data te hebben. De volgende stap: het gebruik van privacy schendende apps in mijn werkomgeving afbouwen en langzaamaan vervangen door privacy vriendelijke alternatieven die in mijn prive omgeving kunnen staan.
