Welcome to the Android privacy course! In this course we will teach you everything about creating the best possible privacy setup on your Android device. Not only do we endorse privacy, but this course is build around a couple of key values: privacy, open-source software, freedom of speech, and if possible: decentralization.

The first part of the course is focusing on the violation of our privacy and the definition of privacy itself. Why would you even want or need it? Is it even possible to maintain your privacy in today’s day and age? Later on the course we will focus on solutions, without the need to go and buy a new phone. It’s even better: your phone will feel like it’s brand new! Better privacy also means more battery life. Gone with all the bloatware and tracking! I don't have any technical knowledge, can I still enroll in this course?

Yes, you can. We believe privacy is a basic human right that should be available to anyone. We made this course so that even our grandmothers could be following it!

When I DeGoogle my phone, will I still be able to use my favorite apps?

You will. In the course we will explain what the different implications will be for using different kind of apps. We will, for example, highly discourage you to use an app like Whatsapp or Facebook. But, if there’s really no other option (on another phone for example), we will still offer the option to use it in the most privately friendly way possible. And, on the other hand, we will still highly encourage you to get used to using alternatives.

I have an iPhone, can I still follow this course?

The first section of the course will be a general one, focusing on the privacy flaws we have on the internet in general. The rest of the course will be specifically for Android phone. The thing with iPhones is that the software is not as editable as much as Android, so there is a lot less you can do. What you can do, however, is purchase a cheap Android phone with great specs (like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro). You can then rebuild this phone and use this one for the maximum amount of privacy. You then have a choice to make.

I want to buy a new but affordable phone to DeGoogle it, which one should I get?

We at Android-Privacy.com we like the Xiaomi Redmi note 8/9, because of it’s great specs for a really low price. This low price mostly comes from all the bloatware that comes pre-installed on it, but we are going to get rid of that anyway 😉

I can just install a custom rom and then I'm done right?

No! This is a big mistake a lot of people make. Just installing a private rom will get rid of Google’s Android, but you’re still far away from the most privacy friendly setup (also see section 2 of the course).

How long is section 3?

Section 3 itself is 2 hours of video material. The rebuilding will probably take 3 hours for a more technical person and 4/5 hours for a less technical person.

How much time do I save?

Figuring all of this out on your own will probably cost you weeks. That’s why we created this course, so you can have digital privacy without the need to do all the research!

Nog bezig met de installatie

Ruim een maand geleden ontving ik de telefoon. Sindsdien ben ik sporadisch bezig met de installatie en de overgang van een iphone naar een een android telefoon.

Mijn contacten zijn overgezet en de de gegevens van Apple zitten op de PC. Ik had gehoopt dat ik de data met Apple Devices voor Windows makkelijker zou kunnen overzetten maar helaas. Nu probeer ik gegevens van Apple te unzippen maar dat lukt nog niet. Ik heb het programma 7-zip gedownload maar zonder succes. Een eenvoudige unzipper zou welkom zijn.

Tot zover mijn ervaring met de nieuwe telefoon.

Mooie en veilige telefoon met fijne ondersteuning

Een privacy telefoon is anders denken en dat maakt het het soms wat moeilijker om de dingen voor elkaar te krijgen. Gelukkig is daar het proprivacy platform om je te ondersteunen waarbij Wesley zelf ook tickets afhandelt. Voor het meeste is het te doen, al werkensommige apps domweg niet op Graphene OS. Dit zijn meestal niet de belangrijkste apps trouwens. Denk aan de McDonalds app.

Het is wel even wennen

Bij het bestellen van de telefoon kon ik het bescherm glas niet bestellen. Die was niet op voorraad. Uiteindelijk werd de telefoon leverd met glas en beschermhoes. Dat zag ik niet staan bij het bestellen. Misschien overheen gekeken. Na het bestellen had ik het geld overgemaakt. Daarna bleef het weken stil. Geen berichtje dat het bedrag was ontvangen. Dat had ik wel fijn gevonden. De start handleiding was wel fijn al klopte er een aantal dingen niet in. Dat heb je tegenwoordig. Met het tempo waarin software en apps veranderen is het lastig alle handleidingen bij te houden denk ik. Er zijn veel handleidingen op de site, maar ik had het fijner gevonden dat er een soort overstap handleiding is met bijvoorbeeld op elke categorie een aangeraden app. Bijvoorbeeld comaps voor de navigatie en bitwarden voor de wachtwoorden. Dan ben je sneller overgestapt naar een goed werkende telefoon.

Graphene good, Pixel bad

Het GrapheneOs systeem was even wennen, maar zeker met de uitgebreide hulp op het platform is er goed mee te werken. Een mooi alternatief. Jammer dat de Google Pixels in mijn opinie vrij waardeloze telefoons zijn waar nog wel eens het een en ander stuk gaat of half werkt (o.a. slechte touchscreen, camera die half werkt). Hopen dus dat snel de Motorola’s komen, daar heb ik meer vertrouwen in.

Ervaring ombouwen telefoon google pixel 9 pro fold.

Bij het ombouwen van mijn google pixel 9 pro fold naar Graphene OS bleek dat het toestel kuren vertoonde.

Aangeraden werd niet verder te gaan, om het toestel te retourneren, en terug te komen met een nieuw toestel.

Voorals werden er geen kosten in rekening gebracht. Dat was heel soepel van ze, want we waren wel al 3/4 uur bezig…

Dus later herkansing met een ‘goede’ telefoon.

Wordt vervolgd.
