Welcome to the Android privacy course! In this course we will teach you everything about creating the best possible privacy setup on your Android device. Not only do we endorse privacy, but this course is build around a couple of key values: privacy, open-source software, freedom of speech, and if possible: decentralization.

The first part of the course is focusing on the violation of our privacy and the definition of privacy itself. Why would you even want or need it? Is it even possible to maintain your privacy in today’s day and age? Later on the course we will focus on solutions, without the need to go and buy a new phone. It’s even better: your phone will feel like it’s brand new! Better privacy also means more battery life. Gone with all the bloatware and tracking! I don't have any technical knowledge, can I still enroll in this course?

Yes, you can. We believe privacy is a basic human right that should be available to anyone. We made this course so that even our grandmothers could be following it!

When I DeGoogle my phone, will I still be able to use my favorite apps?

You will. In the course we will explain what the different implications will be for using different kind of apps. We will, for example, highly discourage you to use an app like Whatsapp or Facebook. But, if there’s really no other option (on another phone for example), we will still offer the option to use it in the most privately friendly way possible. And, on the other hand, we will still highly encourage you to get used to using alternatives.

I have an iPhone, can I still follow this course?

The first section of the course will be a general one, focusing on the privacy flaws we have on the internet in general. The rest of the course will be specifically for Android phone. The thing with iPhones is that the software is not as editable as much as Android, so there is a lot less you can do. What you can do, however, is purchase a cheap Android phone with great specs (like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro). You can then rebuild this phone and use this one for the maximum amount of privacy. You then have a choice to make.

Can I get a refund?

We at Android-Privacy.com we like the Xiaomi Redmi note 8/9, because of it’s great specs for a really low price. This low price mostly comes from all the bloatware that comes pre-installed on it, but we are going to get rid of that anyway 😉

I can just install a custom rom and then I'm done right?

No! This is a big mistake a lot of people make. Just installing a private rom will get rid of Google’s Android, but you’re still far away from the most privacy friendly setup (also see section 2 of the course).

How long is section 3?

Section 3 itself is 2 hours of video material. The rebuilding will probably take 3 hours for a more technical person and 4/5 hours for a less technical person.

How much time do I save?

Figuring all of this out on your own will probably cost you weeks. That’s why we created this course, so you can have digital privacy without the need to do all the research!

In het begin was het even puzzelen omdat ik problemen had met aurora. Maar na een mailtje met support kreeg ik het wel voor elkaar met de juiste handleidingen. Ik heb zelf een computer op linux en ik had een smartphone op android, dus ik ging er uiteindelijk vlot doorheen. Ik moest wel even wennen aan het van te voren inschakelen van de microfoon als ik iemand ga bellen, want dat wil nu soms nog weleens mis gaan. Dan horen ze mij niet, maar ik hen wel en dan denk ik….oh ja…de microfoon staat nog uit.

Heerlijk ook dat werkprofiel. Dat staat bij mij weinig aan. Over het algemeen als ik een uitnodiging krijg om een app te installeren die bijvoorbeeld via google play gedownload moet worden dan vraag ik aan de ontwikkelaar rechtstreeks of via een contactpersoon of ze de app ook beschikbaar willen maken voor F-droid met een korte uitleg dat mijn telefoon op GrapheneOS draait en dat dit de toekomst is.

Google heb ik in de sandbox en whatsapp daar doe ik niet aan. Ik heb inmiddels al vele vrienden zover gekregen dat ze zijn over gestapt op session. Proton gebruikte ik net als session ook al op mijn andere telefoon, dus die overstap verliep ook soepeltjes.

Fijne telefoon met een goede service

Ik heb nu 2 weken de pixel 6a. In het begin was het even zoeken, maar met de goede uitleg van zowel het platform als de persoonlijke uitleg is het helemaal niet zo moeilijk als ik dacht. In tegenstelling tot enkele reviews die ik van te voren gelezen had. Ik kom van iphone af, dus je levert wel iets van gebruikgemak in. Loop nog toch een paar kleine dingetjes aan maar ik weet zeker dat ik die krijg opgelost, met of zonder hulp. En daarnaast, het doel heiligt het middel, zeker in dit geval. Prima telefoon (met op sommige gebieden zelfs fijner ala iphone vind ik) zeer goede service van zowel Ernad als Wesley en ik zou het iedereen aanraden.

Prima apparaat, heel tevreden

Na een tijdje van uitvinden en wennen heb ik inmiddels mijn oude telefoon dan toch terug gezet naar fabrieksinstellingen en heb ik mijn Pixel6a met GrapheneOS in gebruik genomen.

Voorheen had ik me al aangewend om mijn smartphone niet meer mee te nemen als ik van huis ging. Daardoor miste ik regelmatig de mogelijkheid om een foto te maken. Dat was echt jammer. Maar ik zag dat als de prijs die ik moest betalen voor mijn privacy. Nu ik deze beveiligde telefoon heb, neem ik hem weer mee als van ik van huis ga: werkprofiel, bluetooth, mic en cam uitzetten en gaan. In dat werkprofiel zitten nu mijn ‘risico apps’. En fijn dat er zo’n goede camera in dit toestel zit. Daar ben ik heel blij mee. Met het werkprofiel uitgeschakeld kun je in je privéprofiel nu toch gewoon alle basale zaken doen, zonder dat je bang moet zijn dat alles je volgt. Met het werkprofiel uit gaat de batterij ook véél langer mee. Regelmatig haal ik 3 dagen na een volledige laadbeurt. Als je veel video’s of muziek aanzet is de batterij uiteraard sneller leeg.

Wat ik op de Pixel6a eerst wel miste, is de mogelijkheid om er een bedrade headset op aan te sluiten. Er zit namelijk geen 3.5 mm jack aansluiting op en daar had ik even niet op gelet toen ik ‘m bestelde. Dit heb ik opgelost met een USB-C naar 3.5mm jack adapter (Baseus) Dat werkt prima. Je stopt het plugje van je headset in de female kant van de adapter en het andere uiteinde in je telefoon en je kunt luisteren zonder dat je bluetooth aan hoeft. Zelfs de start/stop knop die aan mijn headset-draad zit werkt gewoon. (Daardoor hoef je niet je toestel op te diepen als je het geluid even wilt stopzetten)

Tot slot: ik heb de support (per mail) nog niet echt nodig gehad, de veelgestelde vragen en de video’s gaven me tot nu toe net de juiste antwoorden. De video’s waren soms wel op een wat oudere versie van de software gemaakt, waardoor ik betwijfel of minder ervaren mensen daar goed doorheen komen. Maar dan kunnen ze altijd nog even apart contact opnemen. Ik denk dat er altijd wel een oplossing komt als ik de overige recensies zo lees.

Mijn telefoon en ik zullen het verder prima met elkaar kunnen vinden de komende jaren, zo is mijn verwachting.
