SECTION ONE: THE PROBLEM
SECTION TWO: WHAT CAN WE DO?
SECTION THREE: LET'S REBUILD YOUR PHONE!

Back-up all your data

You want to be starting out completely clean with this new setup. However, there are a couple of things that you’d probably like to export/backup before we start creating the new setup.

What would we like to back-up and/or export?

  • Calendar data

Export this data through your current Calendar/Agenda app. There should be an option to export all your events to an .ICS file. This is the file structure that’s universally accepted in all of the agenda and calendar apps. In section three we will import this data into your new open-source and privacy-friendly calendar app.

  • Contacts data

Do this through your contact app. Go into your settings and look for the export option. If it’s not there, you can use an app like easy backup to export the .vcf file. After exporting it, send it to yourself through sending a message to ‘note to self’ in Signal, or through USB. Please do not use any third party cloud storage 🙂

  • Pictures

Make sure that all the pictures you’d like to have stored on your phone, are backed-up on your computer. Simply do this by transferring them through a USB cable, or by packing them into a ZIP or RAR and transferring them to your computer through ‘note to self’ on Signal.

  • To-do list

Write down/screenshot all of your current to-do activities. In section three we will add them again to your new open-source and privacy-friendly to-do app.

  • YouTube subscriptions

Although we dislike Google services for not supporting our key values. We can understand that, as long as a lot of content creators are on YouTube, you still want to see their video’s. In section three we will highly encourage you to use different platforms, but we’ll also show you how to watch YouTube video’s in a privacy-friendly way.

Although you’ve always been able to export your subscriptions from YouTube, it seems like they removed this functionality in newer versions. Probably to stop people from transferring their subscriptions to other applications. However, you can still try to export your subscriptions by clicking here. Not working? Then we’ll have to subscribe to them manually again. Don’t worry, this is just a one-time task.

  • Crypto in a wallet? Write down your keys

Make sure you have a physical back-up of your keys so that you can restore your wallet on your new setup.
